Shakeela, a 33-year-old entrepreneur from Lal Bazar, Srinagar, is a remarkable example of how determination, courage, and the right opportunities can transform challenges into success.
Married to Mr. Javaid Ahmad Khan, a driver from Manigah, Kupwara, and a mother of two, Shakeela was determined to contribute to her family’s financial stability. After a brief experience as a Radio Jockey at Trehgam Radio, where she felt she lacked a fair opportunity to grow, she chose to take a different path entrepreneurship.
With a vision to build a sustainable business around Kashmir’s rich dry-fruit produce, Shakeela started working towards establishing her own enterprise. Her journey took a significant turn when she became associated with Project JAZBA, implemented by TYCIA Foundation with the support of SIDBI, District Administration, and the Indian Army.
Through JAZBA, she received essential machinery, equipment, guidance, and mentorship that helped her turn her business idea into a viable and growing enterprise. The support not only strengthened her business but also gave her the confidence to believe in her own potential as an entrepreneur.
Today, Shakeela runs a thriving dry-fruit enterprise offering premium almonds, cashews, raisins, walnuts and walnut kernels, saffron (Kesar), Shilajit, pumpkin seeds, and other natural products. She has developed a strong customer base, supplies to local markets and institutional clients, including 41 Rashtriya Rifles (41 RR), and receives orders from customers across different regions.
Her enterprise now generates an annual income of more than ₹4.8 lakh, significantly contributing to her family’s financial security and creating better opportunities for her children.
Shakeela’s journey is more than a story of business success—it is a story of resilience, self-belief, and empowerment. From facing limited employment opportunities to building a successful enterprise of her own, she has emerged as an inspiring example for women in Kupwara and beyond.
