Located in the south-western part of Jammu and Kashmir, Samba district is largely agrarian with a semi-urban character, where a significant portion of the workforce—estimated at around 85–90 percent—is engaged in the unorganised sector, making social security coverage a critical need.
Deputy Commissioner Samba, Ms. Ayushi Sudan, IAS, today chaired a review meeting to assess the implementation and progress of the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) scheme in the district, with a special focus on expanding coverage among unorganised workers.
The Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) is a flagship pension scheme of the Government of India aimed at providing social security to unorganised sector workers such as labourers, street vendors, domestic workers and artisans. The scheme covers workers aged 18 to 40 years, who contribute a nominal monthly amount matched by an equal contribution from the Government, ensuring a minimum assured pension of ₹3,000 per month after attaining the age of 60 years.
During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the need for intensified grassroots-level mobilisation and awareness to bring maximum eligible workers under the scheme. She directed all concerned line departments to identify beneficiaries in their respective jurisdictions and facilitate their enrollment through focused field-level activities.
To ensure effective monitoring, department-wise targets were assigned, and officers were instructed to submit day-wise progress reports. The meeting also underlined the importance of close coordination with field staff, CSC centres, PRIs and concerned agencies for conducting on-the-spot registration and awareness drives.
The Deputy Commissioner urged all officers to work with dedication and coordinated efforts so that the district achieves full saturation under the PM-SYM scheme within the stipulated timeframe.
The meeting was attended by CPO Samba, PO ICDS, ACD, CEO, CMO, ALC Samba, AD Handicrafts, AD Handloom and other concerned officers.
