Srinagar, Aug 20: The historic Chinar Premier League (CPL) 2026 has successfully concluded its league phase and entered the knockout stage, emerging as a major sporting platform that has brought together young cricketers from Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh.
Spearheaded by the Indian Army in partnership with the BCF, the tournament has evolved from a modest local sporting initiative into a large-scale cricketing spectacle, providing youth from diverse backgrounds an inclusive platform to connect, compete and showcase their talent.
The league phase witnessed unprecedented participation and public engagement, recording 1.6 million (16 lakh) viewers through local and online platforms. Around 1,600 athletes participated in the tournament, while 79 teams were selected from 130 applicants and divided into 26 pools.
A total of 81 matches were played across eight venues, taking competitive cricket directly to communities across the region. Following the preliminary stage, 32 teams have qualified for the knockout phase and will now compete for the championship title.
The knockout phase was formally launched at a grand ceremony attended by around 6,000 people, including thousands of school students. The event featured vibrant performances by local school bands and marked the beginning of the knockout contest, with Sheeri Blasters taking on Downtown Bijbera in the inaugural match.
Atal Dulloo, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, presided over the ceremony as the Chief Guest, while Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary, IAS, Commissioner Secretary, Department of Youth Services and Sports, attended as the Guest of Honour.
The participation of senior government officials and the large public turnout reflected the growing importance of the CPL as a platform for youth engagement, sporting excellence and community participation.
Beyond cricket, the CPL is being positioned as part of a broader vision to transform the region into “Wadi-e-Tarjuman” — the Valley of Expression, using sport as a means of empowering youth, strengthening community bonds and creating opportunities for positive engagement.
The initiative marks a significant effort to move beyond traditional security-centric approaches and facilitate community-led sporting activities, enabling young people from different parts of the region to come together on a common platform.
With the knockout stage now underway, the Chinar Premier League 2026 continues its journey towards crowning its champion while reinforcing its larger message of unity, youth empowerment and sporting excellence.
